💐 Mother's Day: A Celebration of Maternal Love Around the World
Mother's Day is a special occasion dedicated to honouring the women who nurture, support, and love us — our mothers, grandmothers, and all maternal figures in our lives. While the day is widely celebrated across the globe, the date and traditions vary by country.
🇬🇧 In the UK and Ireland: March Celebration (Mothering Sunday)
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mother's Day is also known as Mothering Sunday and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent — in 2024, this falls on 10 March. The tradition dates back to the Christian Church, where the day was originally dedicated to honouring the Virgin Mary. Over time, it evolved into a broader celebration of all mothers.
Children in Ireland and the UK often give flowers, handmade gifts, or cards, and many families enjoy a special Sunday meal together. Schools also take part, encouraging children to create small crafts and poems for their mums.
🌎 Rest of the World: May Celebrations
In contrast, most countries — including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic — celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. In 2025, this will be 11 May.
This version of the holiday was popularised in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis in the United States, and it quickly spread around the world. The focus is similar: expressing love, gratitude, and appreciation for mothers through gifts, cards, pampering treats, or meaningful time spent together.
In many countries, cosmetics and beauty products have become a popular choice of gift — helping mums feel cherished and indulged.
❤️ A Day That Transcends Borders
No matter where or when it is celebrated, Mother’s Day is about one thing: love. It’s a beautiful moment to pause and say thank you to the women who shaped our lives — whether with a bouquet of flowers, a handwritten card, or a luxurious skincare gift set wrapped with care.
