The tradition dates back to the Christian Church, where the day was originally dedicated to honouring the Virgin Mary. Over time, it evolved into a broader celebration of all mothers.

In contrast, most countries — including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic — celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. In 2025, this will be 11 May.

This version of the holiday was popularised in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis in the United States, and it quickly spread around the world. The focus is similar: expressing love, gratitude, and appreciation for mothers through gifts, cards, pampering treats, or meaningful time spent together.
